Kamal Mirchandani

Kamal was Born in 1942 at Hyderabad Sindh. Due to the partition of the country in 1947, the Mirchandani family was compelled to leave their ancestral home and travelled displaced to Rajasthan. Starting with Hindi coaching lessons in the early childhood, he passed Parichaya exam of Rashtra Bhasha at Barmer in 1951, later passed High School with First Division at Kota under The University of Rajputana in 1956, then Intermediate Science from The Jaswant College Jodhpur in 1958 and finally secured B.E (Hons) Electrical Engineering with the pioneering batch in 1962 from MBM Engineering College, Jodhpur – The University of Rajasthan.

Armed with an Engineering degree, Kamal embarked upon his professional career. Started at BICC in Calcutta designing Railway Electrification projects. A year later joined Crompton Greaves at Bombay where through Electrical Contracts Dept grew into Branch Manager and was promoted to the Asst. Divisional Manager’s position. During this period Kamal also acquired a Diploma in Business Administration from K.C. College Bombay in 1972. Then after 13 years at Crompton Greaves, came a second uprooting in Kamal’s life. In 1976 he had to leave India for USA to seek medical and special training needs of his 4 years old son Aneel.

Once over he started the career from the drawing board level as a designer at Austin Company in Cleveland, Ohio. Soon took up the exams and got the Professional Engineer Registration (P.E) and moved over to San Francisco, California. There he became Chief Engineer in an Architectural Engineering firm, got actively involved I.E.E.E-USA, became Senior Member and the Chairman of Bay Area Council. During this career he designed several Scientific, Hi-Tech, Laboratories and Educational projects. Finally, Kamal became a partner of ATI Engineering and Architectural firm and retired as Principal and Director of Engineering in 2010.

Kamal, although an engineer by profession has devoted last 45 years preserving and promoting Sindhi Hindu culture in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has been teaching Sindhi language classes, writing Sindhi Language books, conducting religious festivals for the community, Sindhi Sufi devotional gatherings, coaching traditional Sindhi music and conducting Gita Path in Sindhi. For 25 years he has also been performing Vedic Hindu marriage ceremonies as an Aacharya specially for the inter-community and inter-faith marriages, explaining Sanskrit sloka’s in English to make the ceremony meaning full for the new generation. He also conducts traditional Sindhi pre-wedding rituals. He initiated the Isthapana of Jhoole Lal Murtis (Varun Dev) at the two Hindu Temples at Santa Clara and Fremont, California.

Kamal loves music, photography, astronomy, study of Vedic scriptures, playing harmonium, teaching Sindhi songs and Sindhi Language, Yoga practice, travels extensively, writes short articles. His articles on “Mohen-Jo- Daro” have been very well received at the four International Sindhi Sammelans. At the last Sindhi Sammelan of 2022 held in Pune, his latest Book “Learn Sindhi-3” ‘Romanized Sindhi- A Global Solution’ was released and very well received by the International Sindhi community.

Kamal is proud of MBM Engineering College University. Thanks to the MBM Alumni as he has attended 40th, 50th and 60th Anniversary Celebrations already….and now looks forward to the 65th Anniversary.
